Introduction --------------- Why write an in-depth character walkthrough for hit game Adventurers!, you ask? Well, my last guide for GameFAQs (www.gamefaqs.com) was for PC to N64 hit Duke Nukem, and so I thought there's no better way than to go proceed from one pretty but brainless gun-obsessive to another. Secondly, of course, the internet has been absolutely SWAMPED with requests for help in Tesla's quest, generating literally terabytes of cries for aid. You bunch of talentless plebs. This guide details Tesla's quest through the ever-expanding, twisted world of Adventurers! - but remember that the game uses a turn-based battle system with large values that makes very little sense in the grand scheme of things. If you've ever played Zelda II, you'll know exactly what I'm on about. + + + 2. Updates / Changes -------------------- V1.00, 27/04/02 - No, there are no previous versions of this FAQ. This isn't school now, you know, you don't get to hand in multiple drafts of business mergers and legal documentation just because you couldn't get your vowels the right way around! Honestly, you lot sicken me, what with your spellcheckers and your fancy dictionaries... + + + 3. Character description ------------------------ Well, well. Well. What CAN we say about Tesla? Let's put in one of those pointless character bios you find in FAQs containing a load of made-up information, shall we? Name: Tesla Position: Tracker, Third Teir, Geldrin Armed Force Prefered weapon: Big silver gun Favourite foods: Loaf of bread, HP-restoring candy In-game height: 32 pixels FMV height: Approx. 5'9" Love interests: Ardam Tesla's primary interest - aprt from a certain cynical mage, of course - is guns. Very, very big guns. We don't know a great deal about her previous history, other than vague details of a brief relationship with Cody, Khrima's old assistant who is now under some mysterious new form of command with a new weapon to boot. Although he WAS after Gildward, so let's face it, it's probably just going to be Eternion again. Joining the party as a hired gun, in search of adventure and more things to shoot at, Tesla eventually adapted to the constraints of an RPG battle system with only a couple of minor hiccups. She still can't get used to the random misfirings, but I suppose the occasional critical hit makes up for it. 4. Allies and active party -------------------------- Active party options: * Karn * Ardam * Karashi * Drecker * Spybot * Gildward * That pink chookie thing that no-one likes Allies: * Non-playable characters * The cast of RPG World if they can ever be arsed to do another crossover 5. Enemies ---------- Khrima. Duh. Eternion Silver Haired Man In Gold Trimmed Black Armour / Argent Cody The Axe Mizuna Kermit and Meck (we're really scraping the bottom of the barrel here) Army of Khrima (not really enemies as much as mild irritants, but there you go) 6. Walkthrough -------------- After an introductory cutscene with some really DRAMATIC shadowing effects, you'll take control of Tesla and be plunged into one of those annoying pseudo boss battles that get you used to the controls, but you'd frankly have to be utterly cack to lose. Yes, you're fighting The Axe. Simply skip through his challenge text by hammering buttons repeatedly and you'll probably end up choosing the 'attack' button in the process. Tesla fires her gun and incapacitates him. Tesla introduces herself and agrees to join the party, and you'll spend the next few minutes in a training mode (which you can't skip, fortunately. Yes, you DID just kick the living snot out of a major boss character, but now you're going to be told how to beat up some 5HP non-entity) and eventually progress on through the game. After a load of wandering aimlessly, talking to NPCs and going to the inn a lot (you'll need some GP, of course, but it's well known that monsters hoard gold. It's not like they have much else in life) you'll be teleported to a maze full of puzzles and split up into various sub-parties. It's a bit like that bit with the Moogles protecting Terra in Final Fantasy VI, only slightly less annoying. The Maze of Trials will be especially taxing for Tesla - she's had her gun taken away! It's not all bad news, though, you're partnered with Spybot, and Spybot as we all know kicks massive amounts of arse. There's some boring nonsense interspersed with the puzzles involving a love subplot between Drecker and Karashi, but you can safely skip the text of this because no-one really likes Drecker anyway, the hairy ginger git. Naturally, it's Tesla that saves the day. Press the action button to grab Spybot and use him to knock down various walls until you find a way out. You'll meet up with the other parties en route and be all reunited at the exit. I'd tell you to save your game at this ponit but if you haven't been doing that regularly anyway YOU'RE A BLOODY IDIOT. The creator of SD-RAM didn't spend hours toiling away over leftover pizza and Starbucks so that you could start your game fresh every day, you know. The game wears on - you can probably find walkthroughs for the other characters if you're desperate, but don't expect me to be here when you get back - and Karn and Ardam are stranded on a desert island. After Tesla is reunited with her Magey, Karn gets a "telepathic" message from Khrima telling him to head off to the Dark Mountain. Where there are likely many guards. You might want to do some levelling up here, because the next boss is going to wipe your EXP all over the game map... For Tesla's benefit, you'll get a brief recap of how the party met up with Eternion. Probaby happened in one of the Japan-only games, or maybe I just wasn't paying attention, I dunno, but regardless Eternals are fairly nasty and you're going to have to fight one. Surprise! There's an introductory scene in which Spybot will step forward and attack, and then you're into a pitched battle - but the Eternal will focus his attacks on Gildward. Obviously, put him in the back row. It won't make any actual difference, but it's the principle of the thing. Aside from that, use run and defend a lot until the boss enters his second stage - invisibility mode. (Cheers, Ardam.) To the inn! I know you were already in an inn, but go to an inn anyway and recover HP and whatnot. Then wander around as Tesla and talk to a couple of NPCs. The game wears on and you do a lot of walking around until, eventually, you're sent to THE CAVERNS OF IMPROBABLY-ENHANCED PERIL!! This is by far the best section of the game, featuring the most dramatic sounds, music and emotional text you're ever likely to see in an RPG. Tesla can really hone her gun skills here and picks up the Homing Shotgun, too. (Note: The above only applies to V1.047, the Japanese release of the game. It was removed for the US and European releases because the company decided it was too hard. When quizzed about this, a spokesman said "Caverns of trials too hard for lazy Western gamers! We take hardtype of game, yes! We VERY CHEEKY!". There was some debate was to whether this person was really a spokesman or just a horrendous ethnic stereotype, but don't be surprised if you don't encounter the caverns after all.) After the caverns, Tesla will be upgraded with the FREEZE PISTOL! Unfortunately, it's rubbish, so don't bother equipping it and just stick with your standard gun. I suspect someone thinks it's FUNNY to give you useless upgrades... *grumble* It's at this point that you can unlock the secret MAKING OF documentary, "Ask Webrunner". To do so, simply use the action button on the DVD player, located in the Inn of Castle Town. You'll know when you're near because Ardam will make a comment about "Stupid anachronisms" and "losing the will to live". Either way, continue on through the game, levelling up and getting treasure and you'll eventually get... PLOT-ENHANCING CUTSCENE! Hoorah. Eternion turns up with a big knife thingy, sorts out the other Eternals good and proper and stakes his claim as final boss. Oh, and he sends Invisin to kill Khrima, too. There's a big FMV fight scene between Mizuna and Invisin and everything! It's great. I mean, when you get down to it, aren't FMV's so much better than gameplay? You can sit back, relax. Make a sandwich, maybe, read SomethingAwful, return those films to Blockbuster and then get back in time to scroll through a bit of text and start the process over. I won't spoil the cutscene here (but I wouldn't root for Invisin too hard). When it's all over and done, though... head to the inn. I don't care if you haven't actually lost any HP, go to the inn before I hurt you! You'll meet up with Generic Old Man and it's here you learn the details of your quest at long last; You're out to find the elemental relics! Now you've got a bit of direction in the game, so head off towards your first dungeon -- and the active party will be kidnapped. Yes, it's Tesla's time to shine! Karashi is with you as default, and you definitely don't want Gildward. Spybot's got the best offensive capability so stick him in the back row (it all makes perfect sense, this. Trust me, I'm an FAQ author) and head out. Cross the floating platforms over lava through the excellently simple jumping controls used in RPGs. As a reminder, that's select "jump" from the status sub-menu, hold action until the blue bar appears in the red meter, and then hammer back and forth on the directional arrows in a syncopated motion until the display turns cyan. Then you'll jump to the next platform along. Repeat for the rest of the platforms - there's about 30 or so, not counting the split halfway along for a treasure chest - and prepare to save your game... At this point, Cody will confront you and you'll enter battle mode. The important thing is NOT TO ATTACK HIM. If you don't attack him, he'll simply keep talking and show Tesla his weapon. Tesla naturally approves, but DON'T attack. Keep defending and eventually Karn will show up and end the battle. At this point it's standard fare through the temples, although the Temple of Haunted Manganese might give you a spot of grief if you don't have enough potions. It's well worth it, though, because at this point Karashi and Drecker will argue and she'll storm off to the forest. Tesla goes out to join her and in a steamy cutscene they finally profess their love for each other. Karashi starts to slip off her outfit -- ... at this point, the game will freeze and you'll be dumped back to the desktop with a DLL execution error. Yes, there's a bug in the game that renders it unplayable past this point. It's annoying, I know, but it's your own fault. I mean, what were you THINKING, playing an RPG on a PC!? Go and get a SNES from eBay and play some proper games, you bunch of degenerates. (Note that the bug only affects the Windows platform. It might be possible to carry on under a Linux operating system, but wouldn't you much rather go and read slashdot.com instead, hmm? Go on, you probably weren't enjoying this anyway.) 7. Hints and tips ----------------- * Talk to everyone. * Use bombs wisely! * There are many guards in the castle. * Put weaker characters on the back row, they're going to get hurt anyway. * Hold RESET while you turn power OFF! * You did remember to save your game ... right? 8. Bugs, codes and other oddities --------------------------------- - Tesla refers to herself as a "Third Teir" tracker. Is this a translation error, does she mean "Third Tier"? - Replay an FMV: Simply say "no" when you're asked if you understand what you've been told. This will replay the FMV for you in its entirety, and probably some other FMVs as well. Don't think for a moment it makes it skippable, though. - Cheat codes: CHEATS? CODES!? This is an RPG, you cretins, of course it doesn't have any bloody cheat codes!! Go on, get back to Team Fortress Classic with your god modes and your clipping cheats, I've had enough of the lot of you!!! 9. Credits and thanks --------------------- This RPG character walkthrough was written by Chris Allcock (chris@chris-corner.co.uk). Hell, it's the only RPG we're ever likely to see in England. Credits to Mark "Webrunner" Shallow for Adventurers! itself and for the contest, and to F'nor from the Dorksnet IRC server for introducing me to the comic in the first place. I had to read all of the back issues ,it was the only way I could understand what he was saying. And, finally, thanks to you for bothering to read this load of old nonsense. Unless it doesn't get featured, of course, in which case I'm just talking to myself. If I AM talking to myself, I need to pick up a loaf of bread and some cat food later. And my ear really, really itches. ... I think I'll go and make a cup of tea now.
